Natural vs Conventional Products
If you are new to the world of natural skin care you may wonder what makes natural products different than conventional skin care.
Natural products usually have a higher amount of unrefined organic botanical oils, butters and other plant derived actives etc. These unrefined ingredients are nourishing and beneficial to your skin. The green beauty industry has been developing over the past few years and the options for natural preservatives are limited thus offering a shelf life of around 12 months for the products.
Natural products are free of any synthetic dyes and tend to take on the color of the unrefined ingredients. Some natural products may contain essential oils to scent the product.
Whereas mass produced conventional products generally have minimal botanical ingredients which are usually refined and processed, the rest of product is usually made up with ‘filler ingredients’ to create bulk and texture without offering any skin care benefits.
They also contain synthetic dyes or fragrances which has the potential to irritate your skin. Fragrance is an umbrella term that can include hundreds of ingredients. Conventional products also generally tend to be white in color and due to the use of synthetic preservatives, have a longer shelf life 2 years or more.
However, be aware of the rampant greenwashing in the industry.
